How to Plan a Custom Closet
- Measure the space and the doors
Bring the width, depth and ceiling height of the closet, plus where the door swings. Those numbers decide what fits.
- Count your hanging clothes
Split long hanging (dresses, coats) from short hanging (shirts, pants). Double rods for short items can double the hanging space.
- Add drawers for folded items
Drawers keep sweaters, accessories and small items out of sight, and turn a closet into a full dressing area.
- Use the full height
Shelves above the rods are ideal for bags, boxes and out-of-season clothes.
- Choose a finish that matches the room

Custom Closet FAQs
What is the difference between a walk-in and a reach-in closet?
A walk-in closet is a small room you step into, with storage on more than one wall. A reach-in closet is a shallow closet behind doors, used from the room. Both can include hanging rods, shelves and drawers.
What do I need to bring to plan a closet?
The closet width, depth and ceiling height, the door size and swing, and photos of the space. A rough list of what you want to store helps our design team plan the layout.
Do you install closets?
No, we don't offer installation. We help you design and choose your cabinets, and your own contractor installs them.
Can I see cabinet styles in person?
Yes. Visit our showroom at 221 Frelinghuysen Ave, Newark, NJ 07114 to compare door styles, finishes and hardware. Walk-ins are welcome Monday to Friday 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM and Saturday 9:30 AM to 2:00 PM.
