Wide view of a taupe kitchen with peninsula seating, light blue walls and a hardwood floor

This taupe shaker kitchen is a warm alternative to an all-white kitchen. Wood-grain taupe kitchen cabinets wrap the room, and a peninsula with seating gives the kitchen extra work space without closing it off. The cabinets and countertops came from the Kitchen Factory Newark showroom, and the layout was planned with our in-house design team.

The Design

The cabinets follow an L-shape along the window and range walls, with stacked upper cabinets and crown molding to finish the top. The peninsula extends from the base cabinets and seats three. On the opposite side, tall taupe pantry cabinets frame the refrigerator, so it sits flush inside a cabinet wall.

The Details

Matte black handles and pulls give the taupe doors a crisp outline and match the dark accents in the room. White countertops with soft gray veining run across the perimeter and the peninsula, which brightens the wood tone. Light blue walls keep the room fresh and make the taupe cabinets stand out.

Planning a Taupe Shaker Kitchen

Choose a mid-tone, not a dark wood

Taupe sits between white and dark wood. It shows the grain, hides daily wear better than white, and keeps a smaller kitchen from feeling heavy.

Use a peninsula when an island won’t fit

A peninsula gives you seating and counter space with less floor area than an island. Plan the overhang and the number of stools before choosing the base cabinets.

Build the fridge into tall cabinets

Tall cabinets on both sides of the refrigerator add pantry storage and make the appliance look built in.
