This open-plan white shaker kitchen uses a large natural wood island as its anchor. White kitchen cabinets line the perimeter, and the wood island adds warmth in the middle of a bright room that opens onto the living area. The cabinets and countertops came from the Kitchen Factory Newark showroom, and the layout was planned with our in-house design team.

The Design

The cooking wall is built around a white range hood that matches the cabinets, with tall shaker uppers on either side. The sink wall sits under a long row of windows with a farmhouse sink in the center. At the far end, glass-front upper cabinets and a wine cooler create a small beverage area away from the main work zone.

The Details

The island is finished in a natural wood tone with shaker doors and deep drawers, plus a built-in microwave drawer on the working side. A white countertop with light veining tops the island and the perimeter. Three glass pendant lights hang over the island, and the hardwood floor ties the wood island to the rest of the open plan.

Planning a White Kitchen with a Wood Island

Let the island carry the color

In an open plan, the island is seen from the living room, so it is the best place for a wood finish. The white perimeter keeps the kitchen walls light.

Give the range a cabinet-style hood

A range hood in the same white as the cabinets turns the cooking wall into one piece of furniture instead of a mix of appliances.

Plan a beverage area early

A wine cooler and glass-front uppers work best when they are planned with the cabinets. Bring the appliance specs, and the cabinet run can be laid out around them.
